Album: Nomad (EP)

Release Date: 2008

In contrast to the overcharged hustle of Los Angeles where Bross currently resideds, The Big Sur coastline is a sparsely populated area of central California where the Santa Lucia Mountains rise dramatically out of the Pacific Ocean. Regularly enshrouded in fog which evokes an almost dream-like state, it’s a desolate place of great mystique and beauty.

After spending a long winter weekend on a desolate part of the central coast of California, Bross returned to his studio and begin work on a series of tracks inspired by the mystery and landscape of that area.

“Simeon” is the opening track on the EP and treats listeners to a brooding melody floating upon melancholy undercurrents. Like traveling by car through backcountry at twilight, “Countryside” evokes an evolving landscape of ghostly textures and distant percussive effects. Bross states “along with the darker elements of this track, I wanted there to be some implied playfulness.” The last track of the EP, “Nacimiento Road”, leans more toward ambient than anything with an echoing electric piano lingering amidst a dark, spacious drone. A pulsing synth slowly enters and gently propels the piece to its resolution.

This music is great listening for days of rain or contemplative nights.
